HULK (1962) (#1-6, #102-474, #600-635)(INCREDIBLE)(MV) #253 - Plot Synopsis

Hulk (1962) #253
"The Changelings Part II" is written by Bill Mantlo with art by Sal Buscema. The Hulk knows all too tragically well what it's like to be shunned by "normal" society as a monster. So when he befriended Woodgod, a half-man half-goat created by a secret government research facility in the Colorado Rockies (see Marvel Premiere #31), the Hulk thought he had found a true friend. Amid the animal men Woodgod created as his companions, Hulk found peace. But when Betty Ross, Rick Jones, Fred Sloan and retired Gen. Thunderbolt Ross came to Woodgod's village, violence crept in with them. Now the young Centauron lies dead and a dispute over how to mete out justice has split the village of animal-men into two factions! (Shades of Animal Farm!)

The lovely birdwoman Siren suspects that Leoninus, the lion-man, is being hasty in his condemnation of the humans for Centauron's death and her investigation uncovers poison being fed to the youngster just before he died. But as she tries to convince the animal-men not to fight and to instead concentrate on finding the true murderer, no one particularly seems to want to listen. Unthinking hatred also grips the heart of Doc Samson who comes upon the Hulk wandering the mountainside and soon the two gamma-powered titans turn the pristine forest into a gladiatorial arena of pain. Eventually, the truth begins to set the animal-men free and Hulk and Doc Samson put down their fists long enough to ensure Woodgod's village endures Leoninus' bloody coup attempt.
