Fantastic Four #323
"Orphan of the Storm!" - An "Inferno" story tie-in. New York City is ablaze and demonic forces are running rampant. The new Fantastic Four want to do their part and when they come across the former Avenger Mantis fighting off an angry mob of animated parking meters, they chip in. Mantis tells the FF how she has lost the powers of the Celestial Madonna and the child she bore to the alien she once loved. Meanwhile, while insanity reigns in the Big Apple, the rogue Watcher Aron and his minion, the Dragon Man watch on. But in this issue, it's Kang the Conqueror whom we must watch.
The time-lord, not knowing the Mantis no longer possesses the cosmic powers she once had, seeks to drain her energy and use it to destroy a Celestial slumbering beneath Diablo mountain and steal its terrible weapon. Kang launches his assault on the FF, kidnaps Mantis, but doesn't reckon on the new cosmically charged power of the Thing or Johnny Storm's now-supernova level flame. A battle royale is joined and watching and laughing from the wings, there's a specter of evil yet to come! Steve Englehart's story is illustrated by Keith Pollard, whose clean lines and mastery of human form is a delight for comic book art fans.
