Defenders (1972) #122
"Things to Come!" is written by J.M. DeMatteis and drawn by Don Perlin and Kim DeMulder. The hallmark of the Defenders is that they are a "non-team," meaning there is no bylaws, no regulations, no regular members. Heroes come and go as they please and in this issue Patsy (Hellcat) Walker and Daimon (the Son of Satan) Hellstrom leave the team to start a life of their own together. Now that the Son of Satan has shed his Darksoul, he believes that perhaps they can lead a life of happiness out from under the shadow of his diabolical father. And now that her best friend Hellcat is leaving, the Valkyrie also feels as if perhaps her time with the Defenders is through. A summons from Lord Odin himself for her to return to Asgard steels Valkyrie's resolve.
Is this the end of the Defenders? With only the Beast, the Gargoyle and Overmind left can Marvel's favorite "non-team" go on? As if on cue, enter Iceman, the Beast's best friend from his days in the X-Men. Bobby (Iceman) Drake misses the days of being a part of a team, having left the X-Men and then the Champions. So the Defenders open their doors for the icy hero. Meanwhile, in the Greenwich Village Sanctum Sanctorum of Doctor Strange, the original Defenders gather in answer to a mysterious summons. But as the Hulk, Sub-Mariner and the Silver Surfer quickly learn, it wasn't Dr. Strange who called them. Instead, they find it's a trap set by a strange little elf with a great big gun!
