CONAN (1970) (#1-275) (CONAN THE BARBARIAN) (MARVEL) #62 - Plot Synopsis

Conan #62
"Lord of the Lions!" is written by Roy Thomas and drawn by John Buscema and Steve Gan. Conan tracks his beloved Belit across the jungles of the Watambi warriors; always one step behind a legend: Amra. Like a Hyborian Age Tarzan, Amra came to these jungles from the noble bosom of the civilized North only to lose his father and his last connection with the outer world to the violence of men. Adopted by lions (instead of apes as in Edgar Rice Burroughs' epic), Amra prefers the big cats' company to that of his fellow man. But unlike Tarzan, Amra is cruel and despotic. Belit is his prisoner, the latest in a series of wives Amra has forcibly taken to his expansive and remote lair.

Conan encounters a gigantic wart hog, poisonous snakes and treacherous assassins in his quest to reclaim Belit as his own. Belit is a she-pirate, Queen of the Black Coast, and thought among men to be a goddess. Separated from her ships and crew by the ruthless Dragon-Riders, Belit is out of her element but never without resources. So when Makeda, Amra's current Mistress of the Lair of the Lions, takes exception to Belit's presence and tries to run a knife through the newcomer, Belit defends herself well with what's at hand. But Makeda, now replaced at Amra's side, does not go quietly. When she later runs into the pursuing Conan outside the lair, Makeda tells the Cimmerian his beloved and Amra are doomed to be ripped asunder by a cadre of undead ghouls she's awoken with all-but-forgotten spells.
