CONAN (1970) (#1-275) (CONAN THE BARBARIAN) (MARVEL) #6 - Plot Synopsis

Conan #6
"Devil Wings Over Shadizar" is written by Roy Thomas with art by Barry Smith and Sal Buscema. Shadizar is a city men have called "wicked" but in truth it is their actions that make it so. Into these alabaster streets strides Conan in search of gold, as many who walk here are. When he comes across a pair of quarrelsome thieves (remarkably similar to Fritz Lieber's Gray Mouser and Fafhrd the Barbarian as seen in comic form in Sword of Sorcery), he finds he barely has to lift a hand until the cutpurses accidently do each other in. Suddenly in possession of a fair amount of plundered gold, the young Cimmerian does the sensible thing and seeks out a brothel and a wench to spend it on.

At the House of Suwong, he meets Jenna, a comely blonde whose sharp tongue is the equal of her wit. He falls to her plentiful charms and agrees to let Jenna's uncle melt his gold down into one easily carried gold heart. In the desert sands outside the city, 'neath a full and silvery moon, he and Jenna let their passions carry them away. But soon, Jenna herself is carried away by crimson-robed cultists serving one of the many shadowy religions of Shadizar. Before long, Conan finds himself in macabre battle with a gigantic bat who feeds on young girls and rues the day he ever laid eyes on Shadizar's gates.
