CAPTAIN AMERICA (1968) (#100-454) (MARVEL) #172 - Plot Synopsis

Captain America (1968) #172
Guest-starring the X-Men. Cover by Gil Kane. "Believe It or Not: the Banshee!" is written by Steve Englehart with art by Sal Buscema and Vince Colletta. The mid-1970s found the U.S. wracked by doubt about the trustworthiness of the government because of the Watergate scandal. As the living symbol of America's spirit of freedom, Captain America was the perfect subject for author Englehart's conspiratorial plotline in which our most sacred institutions become overrun by media-controlling power freaks.

The Secret Empire's agent, Moonstone, has succeeded in ruining the reputations of Cap and the Falcon by framing them for murder. And now it's time to invite the newspapers and television crews in to view the heroes' final humiliation. But Cap and the Falcon escape before the cameras roll and make their way south to Nashville, Tenn., to lay low for awhile. Unfortunately, a chance encounter on the street puts them right in the path of the Banshee and the outlaw heroes known as the X-Men!
