BATMAN (1940) (#0-713) (DC) #259 - Plot Synopsis
Batman (1940) #259
100-Page Super-Spectacular. Guest-starring the Shadow. Enjoy this collection of the Batman's worst identity crises. As a youngster, Bruce Wayne witnesses a jewelry theft thwarted by the original mystery man known as the Shadow who helps inspire him to become the Batman. Years later he has a chance to solve the crime first committed 25 years ago during "The Night of the Shadow" and realizes some important differences between himself and his boyhood hero (written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by Irv Novick and Dick Giordano).
Then, a group of thugs con a well-meaning millionaire into thinking he's training to be the Dark Knight's replacement in "The Great Batman Swindle!" (art by Dick Sprang). Then, witness the many uses for "The Strange Costumes of Batman" (art by Sprang). Next, two down on their luck detectives imitate Batman and Robin and become "Heroes by Proxy!" (art by Sprang). Elongated Man and the Atom guest star as not one but three caped crusaders take on a criminal kingpin even though there's "Two Batman Too Many!" (Story by Bill Finger and art by Bob Kane and Joe Giella). And, finally our hero must prove his worth and overcome "The Failure of Bruce Wayne" (art by Kane).
