Avengers (1963) #71
Guest-starring the Invaders! "Endgame!" is written by Roy Thomas and drawn by Sal Buscema and Sam Grainger. Kang, the time lord, gambles the fate of the Earth in order to win the power of life and death from the Grandmaster. As his champions, Kang chose his sworn enemies the Avengers, while the Grandmaster created a counter-force he dubbed the Squadron Sinister (vaguely disguised copies of the Justice League of America). In a quartet of global settings, the Avengers were besting their opponents but then in London, the Black Knight unknowingly stepped in and rendered the game null and void. The contest begins again and Dane Garrett, the master of the Ebony Blade, summons his ancestor, the original Black Knight, to reveal just how much peril the world is in due to his interference. (In the end, the forgiving Avengers make the Black Knight their newest member).
Restarting their contest, Kang chooses Yellowjacket, the Black Panther and the Vision as his surrogates. The Grandmaster reaches back in time to pit them against Sub-Mariner, Captain America and the original Human Torch. The setting is Nazi-occupied Paris, 1941, and the heroes of World War II mistake the Avengers for fascist agents. Unable to convince the Golden Age heroes of their intent, the Avengers must do battle for the fate of the Earth. (This cataclysmic fight was seen from the other point of view in Invaders Annual #1). Pitting the Human Torch against the Vision was especially eerie considering the Prof. Horton's flaming android was converted by Ultron into becoming the Vision (see Avengers #134). In the end, the victorious Kang has a choice: life for his beloved but comatose Ravonna or death for the Avengers!
