ASTONISHING X-MEN (2004) (#1-68) (MARVEL)(JOSS WHENDON) #4 - Plot Synopsis

Astonishing X-Men (2004) #4
Written by Joss Whedon with art by John Cassaday. The X-Men go on the offensive against Dr. Rao and Benetech Laboratories which is offering mutants "Hope," a miracle cure for genetic mutation. Infiltrating the research facility isn't difficult for Cyclops, Beast, Shadowcat, Emma Frost and Wolverine. But how can they be prepared for what they find there; mutant corpses being experimented on? Meanwhile, the single-minded Ord of the Breakworld outfits himself with a glove capable of injecting "Hope." His plan is to make the X-Men pay for interfering with his mission on Earth. What that mission is remains a mystery.

While the X-Men explore Benetech, Ord invades the School for Gifted Youngsters. But instead of finding the adult mutants, he encounters Wing and Hisako, two of the younger pupils of the school. After a brief but futile struggle, the children fall to his power and Wing is injected with the "cure" for his powers; a chemical that robs him of his ability to fly. Back at Benetech, Shadowcat finds a sub-basement level that seems to go on forever and is decidedly alien in architecture. When armed guards discover her and open fire, Kitty knows her phasing power will protect her. But who will protect them for the bone-crushing might of Colossus?
