ASTONISHING X-MEN (2004) (#1-68) (MARVEL)(JOSS WHENDON) #3 - Plot Synopsis

Astonishing X-Men (2004) #3
Guest-starring Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Written by Joss Whedon and drawn by John Cassaday. Benetech Laboratories says it has found a "cure" for mutants called "Hope". And that news has hit the mutant community with more force than a phalanx of Sentinels. Now, every mutant who has ever felt persecuted for being different is lining up around the block to have a chance at being normal. Even the X-Men, who are the champions of mutant and humankind alike, contemplate the opportunity to be just like everyone else. At the X-Mansion, the young mutant named Wing and Hank McCoy, the Beast, consider taking Hope. That doesn't sit well with Wolverine who tries to convince Beast (using his claws) that maybe he should reconsider.

But there's something amiss at Benetech where project director Doctor Rao is keeping company with a malefic alien named Ord of the Breakworld. Ord's technology provide Rao with her breakthrough cure and he's not shy about reminding her about it. Meanwhile, Cyclops takes the weapons confiscated from Ord's henchmen to S.H.I.E.L.D. where Nick Fury admits that the rifles are indeed from his inventory. Someone is hiding something and Scott Summers and Nick Fury each suspect each other. But what the Beast discovers while researching Hope is even more shocking: Benetech has been experimenting on mutant corpses.
