OUR FIGHTING FORCES (1954) #107 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Our Fighting Forces (1954) #107
Inspired by the vastly popular war flick The Dirty Dozen, comic book companies in the late-1960s rushed to roll out their own stories of commando squads made up of less than desirable characters. While Marvel had moderate success with Combat Kelly and his Deadly Dozen, DC enjoyed less success with its Lt. Hunter's Hellcats. The concept of taking highly skilled but morally challenged soldiers from the stockade and turning them loose on the Axis Powers was an appealing one. And while Lt. Hunter started his adventures in Viet Nam, DC must have quickly realized it should stick to the much less politicized World War II as its venue for this short-lived character.

In "Raid of the Hellcats," Lt. Hunter continues to gain the grudging respect of his cutthroat crew as he leads the charge directly into the teeth of Japanese machine gun nests. Two captured European scientists have perfected a means of creating deadly nerve gas, a biological weapon that could turn the tide of the war against the Allies. The Japanese want them alive to develop this weapon, while Lt. Hunter has been charged with breaking into the compound and carrying the scientists out. Also, a pilot comes to have a close understanding with his nearly wrecked fighter plane in "Flying Coffin!" (drawn by Jack Abel).
