NEW AVENGERS (2004) (#1-64) (MARVEL) #40 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: New Avengers (2004) #40
Story by Brian Michael Bendis and art by Jim Cheung and John Dell. Okay, so just about anyone or anything in the Marvel Universe may have been or may now be a shape-shifting Skrull. That's going make it hard to smash the bad guys if you can't figure out who the bad guys are! That's the effect the Skrulls were going for! Here's the story of how the whole Secret Invasion began. It starts in the days just after the Kree-Skrull War during which the leaders of Earth's super-hero community, known as the Illuminati, came to the Skrull Homeworld with a warning: leave Earth alone or suffer the consequence.

A proud race with a millennium of conquests under its belt, the Skrull Empire didn't take to that message very well and a bloody conflict ensued. In the end, the Earth heroes won but the Skrulls took from them vital bits of DNA and information they'd later use to create a two-pronged attack on our fair planet: 1) an army of Super-Skrulls that can imitate any combination of super-powers and 2) a covert force of spies and assassins capable of carrying out subterfuge and sabotage. At the head of this second wave of invaders is the Skrull Queen Veranke herself, who chooses as her guise the identity of Spider-Woman!
