GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH (2004) #1 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Green Lantern Rebirth (2004) #1
"Blackest Night" is written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Ethan Van Sciver. Hal Jordan returns as the Green Lantern. The tragic events that restores the former test pilot to the position of Green Lantern of Earth's space sector begin when a spaceship crash-lands in rural New Mexico. It opens, revealing Kyle Rayner, the last of the GLs, wounded and trying to warn Earth of an impending disaster. This bizarre duplication of the crash-landing of Abin Sur and choosing of Jordan as the new GL presages a much darker future than the one ushered in by that historic event. In Northern California, Carol Ferris stands in front of the airfield once owned by Ferris Aircraft but now up for sale. But past the For Sale signs, Carol sees a jet once flown by Jordan and is reminded of the glories of the past. Across the country, current GL John Stewart and former ring-slinger Guy Gardner take in a ballgame with Jordan, who uses the powers of the Spectre to appear normal. But his aura as the Spirit of Vengeance makes everyone at the game want to confess their sins to him and he's forced to leave.

In Star City, Jordan's former crime-fighting partner Green Arrow and his sidekick Speedy get an unwelcome visit from the costumed criminal Black Rock. The villain blasts his way into Green Arrow's arsenal and tries to take Jordan's power ring from his collection. But before he can get far, Jordan shows up as the Spectre and disintegrates Black Rock's hand in a merciless and savage act of vengeance, taking the ring with him. As Jordan appears to be less and less stable, Gardner's powers as Warrior go berserk, the mental giant Hector Hammond laughs mysteriously in prison and airplane pilots flying over the radioactive dead zone that was Coast City notice something odd. Instead of finding the nuked wasteland left behind by the alien tyrant Mongul, the pilots see a metropolis entirely intact except for its complete lack of people. When the JLA investigates, they must struggle with the hardest question of all to ask: Is their former comrade Hal Jordan insane?
