GHOSTLY TALES (1966) #68 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Ghostly Tales (1966) #68
Three grim tales of the supernatural hosted by your favorite pale skin ghoul with a gallows sense of humor. First off, the crew of the Mary Jane, a tobacco ship bound for San Francisco in the 1800s, is fated to sing "Yo Ho Ho and a Dead Man's Jest!" (artwork by Jim Aparo). They find Jonathan Peebles, impossibly alive and adrift on a wooden raft. When they haul him in, he has an incredible story to tell. It seems he's the Mary Jane's second mate and the crew set him adrift without food or water for the crime of murder on the high seas. The problem is: they don't remember it! Peebles doesn't much care if they recall condemning him or not, because he climbs the rigging and curses them just the same. When bullets fail to bring him down, the crew of the Mary Jane knows they're dealing with a revenant from beyond the grave! Now cursed to sail evermore, never to find shore, the ship still wanders with a cursed crew.

Then, in another yarn illustrated by Aparo and edited by Sal Gentile, millionaire businessman Ben Taylor climbs "The Eternal Mountain" to escape the stress of owning his own highly successful company. But even as he drives back down Mount Baldy on his way back to work, he realizes he's only ever really happy when he's on the mountain. His decision to sell his business and return to the woods is the last one he makes, however. Racing back to his trusty guide's cabin, Ben acts like a man possessed to get back to the top of Mount Baldy. Once there, he vanishes when we see his twisted corpse among the wreckage of his car on the narrow mountain road! Finally, Pay Boyette illustrates "Attack of the Phantom," a father-son story about a paralyzed would-be World War II pilot that helps his son survive a deadly airfight over Viet Nam by mysteriously flying to his rescue while never really leaving the ground or his wheelchair.
