ETERNALS (1985) (#1-12) (MARVEL LIMITED SERIES) #1 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Eternals (1985) #1
Premiere issue. "A Mirror for Mortality" is written by Peter B. Gillis and drawn by Sal Buscema and Al Gordon. The Rolling Stones sang of having "Sympathy for the Devil" and for centuries, the Deviants were taken for demons and devils. So could anyone fault the Deviants for being bitter about their state? Created by the Celestial space gods at the same time as their cloud-dwelling cousins, the Eternals, out of the basic DNA of the primitive humans inhabiting Earth, the Deviants were cursed with an ever-shifting genetic structure, leading to sometimes dangerous mutations. Many of their kind are considered too unstable to live.

In anger they enslaved their human brothers and challenged the Celestials. They paid for that perfidy by being exiled to the depths of the Earth, to Lemuria, a city under the sea. Meanwhile, the high and mighty Eternals dwelt in Olympia, their shining city of grace and power. Seething with millennia-old jealousy and hatred, Cataphrax, a two-mouthed giant Deviant, challenges Ikarus the Eternal to a wrestling match while both are disguised as humans. But the match is really a pretext for a plan, proving the Deviants are scheming once more! Meanwhile, Thena struggles with her new role as ruler of Olympia in the wake of her father Zuras' death.
