DEFENDERS (1972) (#1-152) (MARVEL) #41 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Defenders (1972) #41
"Intruder in the Sand!" is written by Steve Gerber and drawn by Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson. Kyle (Nighthawk) Richmond has had a rough past year. After quitting the Squadron Sinister after the group tried to sell the Earth to an alien who wanted to flood it, Nighthawk has had his brain removed and switched with that of a madman super-villain. Now that he's got his head back together, he's hoping to reconnect with Trish Starr, his former girlfriend who tragically lost her arm due to a car-bomb planted in Kyle's car. Nighthawk and Dr. Strange track Trish to a commune in Nevada called the home of the "Dune People." But rather than finding the beautiful amputee happily getting along with her life, our heroes find Trish has gone missing. More, before she disappeared, the normally happy-go-lucky girl had turned inward, searching the occult for deeper personal meaning. Walking off into the desert was her last puzzling act.

Doc and Kyle borrow a dune buggy and head off into the desert following mystic emanations left in Trish's wake. A sudden collision with a magical barrier convinces our heroes they are on the right track. Entering the barrier in his spirit form, Dr. Strange encounters not only Trish (who seems lost in a dream state) but also bestial monsters who seem to have some sort of rudimentary magical might. Bringing Trish out of the dimensional void seems like a good idea to Dr. Strange until her mind opens to release one of Doc's oldest foes, the other-dimensional sorceress named Shazanna. The villainess and her medieval demon-knights quickly overcome both Dr. Strange and Nighthawk and imprison them in a magical cube. Shazanna plans to invade Earth's dimension in full force but the sudden appearance of the Hulk puts a serious crimp in her plans.
