CONAN (1970) (#1-275) (CONAN THE BARBARIAN) (MARVEL) #22 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Conan (1970) #22
Don't believe the cover image of this issue. This isn't "The Shadow of the Vulture!" Deadline pressures forced Marvel to skip continuity and reprint the classic Conan the Barbarian #1 here; a refreshing reminder of how the comic book world was first introduced to Robert E. Howard's sword and sorcery classic. "The Coming of Conan" (written by Roy Thomas with art by Barry Smith and Dan Adkins) shows us a young hero, fresh out of Cimmeria, fighting on the side of the brave and noble Aesir against a raiding party from neighboring Vanaheim. With the raven-haired youth by side, the Aesir leader Olav manages to route the Vanir and send them deep into the hills to await their fate.

However, the Vanir leader Volff and his chief counsel Hothar decide they will not share the doom of their kinsman and plot to escape, abandoning their brethren. Instead, they come across a mysterious cave, a shaman within and his beautiful companion. The Shaman guards a mystic jewel that he claims fell from the stars and offers the Vanir a chance at victory over the Aesir. From the stone, winged demons rise and fall upon the Aesir. But Conan manages to break the spell when the Shaman becomes too enwrapped in his sorcery and destroys Volff in the bargain. But before the enchantment ends, Conan catches a glimpse of his own destiny in the jewel's time-bending facets: a vision of a crown upon his head!
