CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED (1942) #47 HRN133 ED7 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Classics Illustrated (1942) #47
"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" The Jules Verne science fiction classic is richly represented here in illustrations by Henry Kiefer. Captain Nemo is many things: a man without a country, a pirate on the high seas and an undersea master of all he surveys. In the year 1866, the steamer Governor Higginson encounters a strange whale-like craft off the shores of Australia. Using water spouts and a ramming keel, the Nautilus guards her secrets and her waters jealously. Without an explanation for the sail-less vessel, sailors who witness her power call her a sea serpent. And after each encounter, the myth grows. The United States, as a burgeoning sea power and global power, sends Commander Farragut to ask Professor Arronax, a noted marine biologist, to join in the hunt for the creature. He accepts eagerly.

While aboard the Navy Frigate Abraham Lincoln, Arronax and sharp-eyed Mate Ned Land sight the strange vessel before long and begin the chase. But before long, it becomes clear that the crew of the Abraham Lincoln are the prey, not the predator. The Nautilus wrecks the U.S. Navy ship and takes Prof. Arronax, Land and their friend Counseil aboard as guests of the captain. Aboard the undersea craft, the incredulous trio meet Nemo, an Indian who seeks to rid the world of tyrants and despots; using his magnificent craft and highly trained crew to seek out adventure and treasure. Through arctic ice and shark-infested tropical waters, through undersea coral beds and into the halls of lost Atlantis itself, Arronax and his partners view the wonders of the world. But even as their eyes behold marvels beyond their comprehension, their thoughts are always of ...escape!
