CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN (1958) (#1-87) (DC) #71 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Challengers of the Unknown (1958) #71
"When Evil Calls!" is written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by Frank Springer. O'Neil continues his memorable run on the Challengers of the Unknown by weaving in several story elements inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythology. In the shadow of Skull Mountain, a small village becomes the nexus of evil forces. Chu, the beast from another planet with designs for world domination, closes in on the town from the nearby woods, still smarting from his recent defeat at the hands of the Challengers. In the village, an old crone possessing sorcerous powers awaits his arrival, although she only realizes it on a subconscious level. And the village's small-minded mayor stands ready to shoot first and ask questions later of any strangers who happen to come by. Joined by their newest member, the beautiful Corrina Stark, the Challengers struggle to get Prof. Haley to a doctor. Haley's mind has been possessed by a computerized evil spirit and his body wracked by bullets fired by Stark's now-deceased father.

However, before the Challs can get Prof medical help, the crazed adventurer turns on his former teammates once more. In the struggle, Red, who has already donated an eye to help his brother see, loses sight in his other eye in a fiery explosion. This disaster is felt miles away by Tino, Red's folk-singing brother, who immediately organizes his fans to converge on Skull Mountain to help Red. Meanwhile, the village crone Granny Dark turns her powers on local schoolchildren who are teasing her. This display of magic draws the attention of Chu who recruits her to his cause. When the Challengers finally make it into town, they are confronted by an angry mob who blame the outsiders for their recent troubles. But when the chips are down and the Challs are tied to stakes for burning, it's the town mayor who steps in to stop Chu from executing our heroes. If the Challengers make it out alive, how will they be changed by this startling turn of events? Also, watch as a character actor who can don 1,000 faces asks the fatal question "Who Am I?"
