CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN (1958) (#1-87) (DC) #70 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Challengers of the Unknown (1958) #70
Cover by Neal Adams. "A Scream of Yesterdays!" is written by Denny O'Neil and drawn by Jack Sparling. Along with snazzy new purple and gold uniforms, the Challengers get a new type of menace with this issue. In the past the Challengers' foes have been science-born menaces, otherworldly aliens and even costumed criminals but with the advent of the late 1960s, growing interest in the occult leads a new generation of writers to pit our heroes against supernatural menaces. In the shadow of Skull mountain, 80 years ago a family named Lovecraft were driven into a murderous rage by a falling meteorite. Since that time, a cult of star-worshipers called the Slaves of Chu has cropped up and held bizarre rituals in the dark of the new moon.

Against this backdrop, the Challengers of the Unknown play a very personal drama of their own. Prof Haley has been felled by gunfire and lies near the point of death. Corinna Stark, daughter of Algernon Stark who shot Prof, has placed him in a cryogenic sleep chamber to stave off the hand of death. But with all roads from Skull Mountain washed out by torrential rain, the Challengers can't seek outside help. Another attack launched by Algernon Stark rocks them on their heels and they awake to find Prof's body and Algernon missing. Near the old Lovecraft farm, the Slaves of Chu turn Algernon over to their master, a hooded monster who drains his lifeforce with his slimy green tentacles. The Challengers also soon fall to the Slaves of Chu and learn that their tormentor is a space-traveler from a race called the Togga. The greater horror is that they are spore-like creatures bent on eradicating all human life!
