CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN (1958) (#1-87) (DC) #53 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Challengers of the Unknown (1958) #53
"Who is the Traitor Among Us?" is drawn by Bob Brown. During the mid-1960s, the Batman TV show starring Adam West and Burt Ward was sweeping the airwaves, becoming a cultural phenomenon. A key factor of that amazing success were the wacky super-villains the show featured, portrayed by some of Hollywood's top talent. Hoping to cash in on that success, DC put the word out for all of its books to ramp up the cape and cowl factor; creating wackier and wackier super-foes. Case in point: this issue's duel threat consists of the Dreadful Dimension Man and the Incredible Iron Dictator (a fascist madman who thinks of himself as none other than Adolf Hitler himself).

During this time, the Challengers of the Unknown were also transformed from being explorers of the fantastic to nearly super-heroes, although they possessed no super-powers. Drawn in their Gallopin' Gizmo rocket ship to a remote island by telepathy, Rocky, Ace, Prof and Red discover a pre-recorded message waiting for them planted by the mysterious Scientist X. He explains that he wants to pass on the secrets of dimensional travel to the world, but has hidden these discoveries away in order to keep them out of the wrong hands. Those wrong hands happen to belong the Dimension Man, a now-you-see-him-now-you-don't kind of guy who uses the Challs to chase down the secrets for him. His ally in this crooked endeavor is a metal skull-headed madman called the Iron Dictator whose dream it is to resurrect the Third Reich!
