CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN (1958) (#1-87) (DC) #46 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Challengers of the Unknown (1958) #46
"The Strange Schemes of the Gargoyle" is written by Bill Finger and drawn by Bob Brown. The theme of the Hunchback of Notre Dame is replayed here as a master criminal, ugly in appearance and actions, discovers a different side of himself in the eyes of a beautiful girl named Laura whose blindness gives her an objective viewpoint of his nature. The Gargoyle uses his incredible agility and strength to evade the police and the Challengers of the Unknown. His rooftop tactics keep the authorities on their heels as he commits robbery after robbery. But in the trust and warmth of the blind girl's kind words begins to convince the crook that he may be able to walk the straight and narrow path. The Gargoyle plans one last job to pay for an operation to restore Laura's eyesight.

But when the bandages come off, the girl recognizes the Gargoyle as the super-criminal described by police on radio broadcasts. Her repulsion at being taken in by a crook sends the Gargoyle back to the angry life he was ready to leave behind. The Gargoyle continues his war with the forces of justice in the second story as the Challengers try to pick a new leader in a contest in which "The Best Challenger Wins." Challengers' honorary member June Robbins suggests that, in order to stop the squabbling among Ace, Red, Rocky and Prof, a contest be made of their attempt to storm the Gargoyle's mountain headquarters. To each Challenger she gives an obscure object: an hourglass, a fountain pen, a balloon and a door key, and tells the Challs they came from a mysterious old man. In battling the Gargoyle's robot pterodactyls, killer submarines, murderous booby traps and carnivorous apes, the Challengers find these everyday objects save their lives. And before the day is through, the Challs have their new leader: Ace Morgan, jet pilot extraordinaire.
