CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN (1958) (#1-87) (DC) #30 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Challengers of the Unknown (1958) #30
"Multi-Man ... Villain Turned Hero." Can a criminal change his ways? Perhaps, but when that criminal has commanded the powers Multi-Man has had at his disposal, he needs to be watched very closely indeed. Case in point: the Challengers are summoned to the psychiatric hospital where their old foe Multi-Man has been staying since being struck with amnesia. Because he's forgotten his evil motivations, Multi-Man has become a great help around the hospital. He's reprogrammed their medical computer to make it more efficient and while the Challengers are there visiting, he uses his remarkable ability to change his form to become covered in metal in order to put a raging fire in the specimens lab. With the world's governments aware of Multi-Man's abilities and apparent reformed nature, the Challengers are asked to help their former enemy to help the Earth.

Their first task is to stop a snow-melt from flooding a nearby village. Multi-Man sends the Challengers aloft with giant mirrors to turn the water into steam. Next, he supervises the lifting of a meteorite via gigantic magnet to stop up a threatening volcano. However, during this daring feat, Multi-Man suffers a severe shock to his system. Unbeknownst to the Challengers, he's regained his memory and soon reverts to his old ways. Assuming a gigantic form, Multi-Man delivers an ultimatum to the world's governments in an attempt to extort money and power. Luckily, the Challengers are ready to neutralize his threat and soon Multi-Man is behind bars again. Next, read the exciting adventures of F. Gaylord Clayburn III, the playboy adventurer who would be "The Fifth Challenger."
