AVENGERS (1998) (#0-84, 500-503) (MARVEL) #56 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Avengers (1997) #56
Writer Kurt Busiek exits his run on Marvel's premiere super-team book with an audit. "Lo, There Shall Come An Accounting!" is superbly drawn by Yanick Paquette (the way he draws women is so eye-catching!). The Avengers are funded by the Maria Stark Foundation and as such are subject to audit for their sometimes-extraordinary expenses. Case in point a recent encounter in downtown Manhattan with the menacing golems known as the Elements of Doom. One by one, the Avengers recount their version of the events that led to multi-million dollar damages but hundreds of saved lives.

First the Beast, then Iron Man, U.S. Agent, Thor, She-Hulk, Captain America and then Jack of Hearts: each accounts for their actions and decisions in their own inimitable way. Beast is flowery of speech and self-aggrandizing in a comical way. Iron Man approached the problem as a scientist. U.S. Agent resents the red tape associated with meting out justice. Thor cops an imperial attitude. Captain America thinks strategically, finding the Elements' creator in federal prison. Jack of Hearts delivers the coup de grace. When the auditors leave, they take away a better understanding of the cost of being a hero.
