TEEN TITANS (1980) (#1-91) (DC) #3 - Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Teen Titans #3
First appearance of the Fearsome Five! Art by George Perez. Words by Marv Wolfman. The theme of super-team versus super-team is a time-honored tradition in super-hero comics. The great battles (Avenger vs. X-Men in Avengers #53 or the Avengers vs. the Defenders, for example) were usually premised on some villainous manipulation or well-meaning misunderstanding. But the idea of a team of super-villains (which got its start with the Injustice Society of the World in All-Star Comics #37) always proved more interesting and pure in intent than heroes beating up on heroes. Enter the Fearsome Five: newcomers Gizmo, Shimmer and her brother Mammoth, Psimon and perennial JLA foe Dr. Light (Is it just me, or does Gizmo resemble a pint-sized John Byrne?).

When the mysterious Raven has visions that the Titans must face off against the Fearsome Five, you know 'go-time' is just around the corner. And this issue wastes little time before it gets right to the one-on-one battling. Nothing beats a good-old dust-em'-up in a super-team book and Wolfman and Perez relish in it for 25 glorious pages. Plus, this is the first appearance of Titans Tower and the first mention of Starfire's homeworld, Tamaran, by name.

Wolfman takes an old saw in super-hero comics, the forming of a villainous team of super opponents, and deepens its meaning. This isn't simply the vengeful plot of Dr. Light at work here, it something much more sinister (as personified by the enigmatic Psimon). And, just around the corner this plot has a very dark and nasty place for the Titans' senior sponsors: the Justice League of America. Perez is really allowed to let loose with battle panel after battle panel employing all along the way the special effects he learned from a wellspring of Silver Age artists. For die-hard super-hero fans this is cake and all of the icing too!
