FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) (#1-416) (MARVEL) #22 - Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Fantastic Four (1961) #22
"The Return of the Mole-Man!" is written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby and George Bell. Featuring the first appearance of Invisible Woman's expanded powers. The first foe the F.F. faced as a team returns in this odd tale of subterfuge and power. Our story begins as one of Reed Richards' attempts to study Sue Storm's invisibility power inadvertently enhances it. Now, Sue can create invisible force fields of any shape and size she desires. She can also turn other people and things invisible. The F.F. barely have time to celebrate the Invisible Woman's new power, however, before the team is inundated with complaints from fellow tenants of the Baxter Building. The gripes range from worries about the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile housed on the F.F.'s floor to the Thing's noisome workout routines. One complaint is delivered by a Fred Gwynne lookalike, straight out of "Car 54, Where Are You?"

Convinced they need to find a new headquarters, the members of the F.F. turn to a newspaper advertisement about a nearby deserted island. Investigating, they find the island is surrounded by a near-impenetrable barrier reef, keeping it from being inhabited by any normal humans. Soon after they land, however, trouble begins as the F.F.'s U-Car sinks underwater. Next, the Mole Man appears and lures them underground. There, he traps each member in a separate cell of death designed just for them. While they struggle with his lethal traps, the Mole Man reveals he prompted all of the neighbors' complaints and placed the newspaper ad for the island, hoping the F.F. would take the bait. His latest plan is to sink Washington, D.C. and Moscow beneath the surface of the Earth, triggering World War III and ensuring only he and his underground dwellers would survive the nuclear conflagration!
