FANTASTIC FOUR (1961) (#1-416) (MARVEL) #14 - Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Fantastic Four (1961) #14
Guest-starring the Sub-Mariner. "The Merciless Puppet Master" is written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers. The romantic rivalry between Mr. Fantastic and the Sub-Mariner over the Invisible Woman comes to a head with the Puppet-Master pulling the strings. Returning from a trip to the Moon where they faced the Red Ghost and his murderous mutated apes, the F.F. are greeted as heroes and celebrities by an adoring public. But all of the TV cameras, publicity seekers and fan clubs can be pretty tiresome after a long space journey, so the Human Torch arranges for a quick escape to the Baxter Building via a hot air funnel. Before long, a certain restlessness takes a hold of the young Sue Storm, however, and she uses high-tech means of seeking out the underwater Atlantean Prince Namor; hoping to discover what feelings she may have for him.

Meanwhile, the Puppet-Master, recently released from a mental ward, sets out on his newest plan to destroy the F.F. Using the radioactive clay that is his stock and trade, the dastardly villain seizes control of the Sub-Mariner. He commands Namor to summon and kidnap Sue and to take her to his undersea headquarters. The Sub-Mariner then throws down the challenge to Mr. Fantastic, the Thing and the Human Torch to dare to try to come rescue her. They track down the mesmerized Prince and a titanic battle ensues. Namor uses every bizarre form of sea life he commands and fights the FF to a standstill. But although the Puppet-Master exerts all of the brain power he can summon, Namor cannot bring himself to kill our heroes and throws off his mental chains. Instead, the Sub-Mariner leaves it to Sue to decide for herself where her destiny lies. Of course, she chooses Reed and her family: the Fantastic Four.
