DEFENDERS (1972) (#1-152) (MARVEL) #13 - Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Defenders (1972) #13
"For Sale: One Planet ... Slightly Used!" is written by Len Wein and drawn by Sal Buscema and Klaus Janson. Cover by Gil Kane. Guest-starring the Squadron Sinister. Created by the Grandmaster as pawns to use against the Avengers, the Squadron Sinister are Hyperion, a super-strong powerhouse from a subatomic world destroyed by Earthlings; Doctor Spectrum, possessor of a sentient power prism that can create objects out of solid light; the Whizzer, a super-speedster with a nihilistic view of life; and Nighthawk, a spoiled rich boy who is trained to the peak of human condition and whose strength and agility triple during nighttime hours. This criminal version of the Justice League of America was defeated by the Avengers (in issue #70) and then floated in and out of conflict with the Defenders and the Avengers over the next several years. As true Marvel Universe afficionados know, the Grandmaster fashioned his Squadron Sinister after a real super-team in a parallel universe called the Squadron Supreme (see their solo series and the recent Supreme Power title).

Our story begins with Nighthawk shows up at the front door of Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum in Greenwich Village and blows the door of its hinges to get the attention of those inside. Once Valkyrie, the Hulk and Doc calm him down, Nighthawk describes how he was summoned by his former teammates to be part of a new scheme: a plan to melt the polar icecaps and to flood the Earth to make habitable for an invading alien race. The Squadron had "sold" the planet to a powerful offworlder known only as Nebulon, the Celestial Man. Not wanting to be part of their mad scheme, Nighthawk fled but found Nebulon had made him invisible to the Squadron's old foes, the Avengers, but not the Defenders. After recruiting the reluctant Sub-Mariner, the Defenders race to the North Pole to clash with the Squadron. But will they be in time to save the Earth from drowning?
