WHITE DEATH GN
by Rob Morrison & Charlie Adlard
For four years, "The Great War," World War I, raged across the planet.
Millions were sent to their deaths in pointless battles. The Italian Front
stretched along the borders of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empires,
in treacherous mountain regions. In the last months of 1916, a private
in the Italian Bersaglieri returns to his childhood home in the Trentino
mountain range to find it no longer a place of adventure and wonder as
it was in his youth, but a place of death and despair. Amongst the weapons
of both armies, none is more feared than the White Death: thundering avalanches
deliberately caused by cannon fire... which, like war itself, consumes
everything in their path.

That word is "qelipoth": meaning, literally, the husks of the dead. They're
dangerous creatures, once men but now without souls, consumed by their
own emptiness and hunger, and hating the living for the mere condition
of being completely alive. Pursuing an unpredictable killer, police detective
Eric Sharpe watches his life turn into a waking nightmare as he gains "the
sight" and he discovers Qelipoth not only exist, but they are everywhere.
And now they want him dead. Punctuated with bloody staccato action and
underscored by a puckish world view, Mortal Souls blends the rhythms of
horror comics and crime comics. And it's going places neither have ever
been before.

THE COMICS JOURNAL #242
This month, The Comics Journal unearths a long-lost interview of the
legendary cartoonist and illustrator Noel Sickles. Sickles drew the adventure
strip Scorchy Smith, which in turn inspired Milton Caniff (Terry and the
Pirates and Steve Canyon) to further refine Sickles' chiaroscuro style,
later championed by Alex Toth. The interview is conducted by another legendary
cartoonist, the late Gil Kane, and comics historian Ron Goulart. This is
a fascinating conversation among three articulate members of the profession,
part history, part shoptalk. This issue boasts an expanded reviews section,
featuring analysis of an amazingly broad spectrum of comics - from The
Invisibles to Skibber Bee Bye to Peanuts; from Jack Cole to Rick Geary
to Mark Kalesniko, and from Astro City to Berlin - as well as a number
of fascinating essays about foreign comics. In addition to the Journal's
award-winning news and analysis, this issue also marks the return of critic
R. Fiore and his Funnybook Roulette column.

THE COMPLETE CRUMB COMICS VOLUME 16
by R. Crumb; edited by Eric Reynolds
The multiple award-winning The Complete Crumb Comics series - the definitive,
comprehensive series reprinting the entirety of Crumb's published career
- enters the mid-80s with this 16th volume, a period that many critics
consider to be the richest of artist's career. Anchored by Crumb's contributions
to the seminal anthology Weirdo, created and edited by Crumb, this volume
focuses on the years 1985-1987 and includes the seminal "Jelly Roll Morton's
Voodoo Curse," from Art Spiegelman's RAW magazine. Also featured are Crumb's
gorgeous "Pioneers of Country Music" color portrait series, and such Weirdo
classics as "The Religious Experience of Philip K. Dick," which chronicles
the last years of the highly regarded science-fiction writer who experienced
an intense vision of the apocalypse and believed that he was possessed
by the spirit of Elijah. Also included is Crumb's first issue of Hup, his
most-acclaimed solo series of the 1980s and 1990s. The book is rounded
out with a new cover and introduction by Crumb, and a color section that
includes rare album art for various jazz and blues greats, as well reproductions
of his various comic book covers from this period. Crumb is the most revealing
of all artists, and The Complete Crumb Comics leaves no stone unturned!
Features a 16-page color section. Available in Softcover, as well as Hardcover
and Deluxe Signed & Limited Hardcover (signed by Crumb) versions!

KRAZY AND IGNATZ: THE KOMPLETE KAT KOMICS 1925-26
by George Herriman; designed by Chris Ware
Fantagraphics is proud to re-present Krazy Kat to a new generation
of readers entering the New Millennium. This debut volume reprints what
many consider to be Herriman's prime: his Sunday strips from 1925 and 1926.
Each volume will reprint two full-year's worth of Sunday strips, or 104
full-page, black-and-white Sunday strips (Herriman did not incorporate
color into the strip until 1935). Krazy Kat is a love story focusing on
the relationship of its three main characters. Krazy Kat adored Ignatz
Mouse. Ignatz Mouse hated Krazy Kat (expressed by his throwing bricks at
Krazy's head). Offisa Pup loved Krazy and sought to protect "her" (Herriman
always maintained that Krazy was genderless), mostly by throwing Ignatz
in jail. Each of the characters was ignorant of the other's true motivations.
This simple structure allowed Herriman to build entire worlds of meaning
into the actions, building thematic depth that led critics like Gilbert
Seldes and E.E. Cummings to recognize Herriman's genius almost immediately.
Each of Fantagraphics' Krazy Kat volumes will be designed by Chris Ware,
creator of the wildly successful Jimmy Corrigan. This beautiful volume
picks up where the Eclipse series left off and includes material never
collected before.

try to cheer Ofelia up. Ofelia's start to her book about Luba is interrupted
by a soul-searching bout of writers block, and Luba discovers from her
sisters Fritz and Petra that she was abandoned by her mother (or was she?).
Gilbert's ability to create beautiful stories with a rich depth of character
around Luba and her family and continue to develop best-selling comics
in the Love & Rockets, series is simply amazing. Viva LUBA!

PALESTINE TP SECOND PRINTING
by Joe Sacco
Based on months of research and an extended visit to the West Bank
and Gaza Strip in the early 1990s, Palestine was the first major comics
work of political and historical nonfiction by Sacco. Palestine has been
favorably compared to Art Spiegelman's Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus for
its ability to brilliantly navigate such socially and politically sensitive
subject matter within the confines of the comic book medium. Sacco has
often been called the first comic book journalist, and he is certainly
the best. This new edition of Palestine features a new introduction from
renowned author, critic, and historian Edward Said, one of the world's
most respected authorities on the Middle Eastern conflict.

SAFE AREA GORAZDE HC SIGNED
by Joe Sacco
Signed edition at a special price! Praised by The New York Times, Brill's
Content, and Publisher's Weekly, this book looks at the war in the former
Yugoslavia. Sacco spent five months in Bosnia, immersing himself in the
human side of life during wartime, researching stories that are rarely
found in conventional news coverage. The book focuses on the Muslim-held
enclave of Gorazde, which was besieged by Bosnian Serbs during the war.
Sacco lived for a month in Gorazde, entering before the Muslims trapped
inside had access to the outside world, electricity or running water. Gorazde
is Sacco's magnum opus, and with it he is poised too become one of America's
most noted journalists. The book features an introduction by Christopher
Hitchens, political columnist for The Nation and Vanity Fair.

QUEEN & COUNTRY VOLUME 1 HC
by Greg Rucka & Steve Rolston; cover by Tim Sale & Matthew
Hollingsworth
As part of the Special Section of Britain's Ministry of Intelligence,
Tara Chace is one of a handful of operatives they call when they need to
clean up a mess, or to make a new one. It's a world of questionable morals.
For instance, is it better to assassinate a general in the Russian mafia
rather than allow him to peddle more guns and drugs in underprivileged
countries? Tara's bosses seem to think so. But the Russian mafia ask their
own question - once someone has taken the life of one of their officers,
can they continue to let that person live? Greg Rucka peels back the lid
on the traditional espionage story to see the nastiness inside, and Steve
Rolston brings it to life with stunning clarity. Available in two formats:
a special hardcover edition, which is a direct market exclusive and limited
to one print run, and a more widely available softcover edition.
