Comic Book Benefit Auction Results
A Huge Success!

Howdy!

I would like to begin today by thanking those of you who rallied to our cause over this past weekend. After I wrote my column on Saturday morning asking of support of local comics shops, we experienced an amazing outpouring of support at all four of our Mile High Comics stores, from an untold number of local comics fans. I can personally assure you that your kindness was very much appreciated by everyone at Mile High Comics, and also by my wife, and our four daughters. Thank you for helping to make our Christmas brighter!

For those of you who may have missed my Saturday newsletter, my basic premise was to request that everyone who reads this newsletter to give at least a little bit of extra consideration to stopping by their local comics shop during this holiday shopping season. Unlike the Big Box retailers and the online giants who control almost all commerce in America, local family-owned retail stores (of all kinds) are struggling. We somehow manage to survive, but competing against the giants gets harder every year. Simply put, if you want us to keep being there for you, you need to vote with your wallet, and spend at least a little bit of your holiday budget with us.

That having been said, all of us certainly understand the need to shop wisely, and the imperative to stretch family budgets whenever possible. Big Box retailers do a great job of bringing us low cost imported goods, and thus make our standard of living better. At the end of the day, however, when you shop with them you are nothing more than another credit card going through the machine. Regardless of how many times that you patronize that store, no one cares whether you live, or die. That is not to say that they are bad in any way, but rather than they deal with such a huge number of customers, that everyone is reduced to being just a statistic.

The exact opposite is true with most locally-owned stores, and especially your friendly neighborhood comics shop. We don't only care about your survival on a personal level, but we also seek in every possible way to increase your happiness by ordering in thousands of great holiday gift items. Simply put, however, most comics shops only survive because of 200-300 loyal patrons. They may be visited sporadically by any number of other comics collectors during the course of a year, but those 200-300 local fans who form the core of their clientele are the people who make the difference between survival, or extinction, for that particular comics shop.

If those key people then opt to spend their entire holiday budgets at Wal-Mart, Target, or Amazon, that local comics shop that they love to visit during the rest of the year is in serious trouble. Diamond Distributing, the monopoly company that distributes ALL new comics and books does not take excuses as payment for their weekly deliveries. No payment for all those holiday gift items you ordered, no more new comics. In a nutshell, that is the brutal survival equation for all comics shops. That is also precisely why I urged everyone to support their favorite local shop. We need your support during this holiday season, and also during the week after Christmas. Please do stop by your local comics shop and spend a few dollars on gifts. I promise you that your contribution will be very sincerely appreciated, and definitely will not go unnoticed. Thank you.

Below you will see a photo of me presenting our check, and the donated clothes and toiletries we have received thus far, to Caeri Mancini, the 41st Emperor of the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire.

Donation Check to Urban Peak

If you missed our Urban Peak auction, I want you to know that we will keep the huge donations box for new (or good condition) used winter clothing at the front of our Jason St. Mega-Store, until December 31st. The homeless children and teens helped by Urban Peak will desperately need warm clothing and personal toiletries, especially when the weather turns bitter cold in January. If you have any hats, coats, sweaters, boots, mufflers and scarves, socks, gloves or personally-sized toiletries that you would be willing to donate, you can drop them off at any Mile High Comics location, and we'll make sure that they get to those kids in need.

Also, we are still accepting cash contributions for Urban Peak. Mile High Comics will immediately match any cash donation that you make, thus doubling the positive impact of your contribution. So you know, there will be an estimated 2,000 young people who will have no option but to sleep in alleys, hallways, and under bridges in Denver this January. Working together, we can help to make the lives of those lost and desperate children just a little bit better.

Happy Holidays!
