Local News - Poker Tournament Saturday - Golden Age/Silver Age Comics Auction Dec. 12th

Howdy!

The big news for this weekend is that we will be hosting our third Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament at our Jason St. Mega-Store. Our tournament begins at 11 AM, and should be over by about 2:30. The grand prize is a $250 Mile High Comics gift certificate, with a $100 certificate for second, and $50 certificates for places third, fourth, and fifth. I am personally organizing this tournament as Prince Royale 42 of the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire, with the net proceeds of the event being donated to RAINBOW ALLEY, a local GLBTQ organization that helps homeless kids, and those who are bullied at school. Mile High Comics is donating all of the prizes, and will cover the cost of coffee and light snacks.

POKER FLYER

The big difference between Saturday's tournament and our past two events is that we have made it possible for you to effectively play for free! To explain, our previous games have had a $25 buy-in, with those funds dedicated to our charity. The difference this time is that those of you who register in advance can receive an immediate rebate of your $25 entry fee, in the form of a $25 Mile High Comics gift certificate. Simply put, we implemented this instant rebate of entry fees to be better able to gauge in advance how many dealers and tables we need to set up for the game. If you help us out by registering in advance, Mile High Comics will cover your entry fee. It doesn't get much better than that...

Previous Winners

The key element to our new offer is that it only applies to those who can take the time to register in advance. We will most certainly still accept walk-in players on the day of the game, but everyone needs to know that no rebates will be issued on that day. It therefore behooves those of you who would like to play in Saturday's game to stop by your favorite Mile High Comics email location by close of business on Friday, and sign up in advance. We typically have 40-50 players per game, so they really are a lot of fun!

Speaking of fun, our other big upcoming event is a huge no-minimum-bid auction at our Jason St. Mega-Store on Saturday morning, December 12th. This auction will feature three elements, with the first being our annual toy and statue liquidation sale. Will Moulton is putting together a 500-item selection that will also include old comics, modern variants, prints, trade paperbacks, and hardbacks.

The second part of our auction on the 12th will be a benefit for Urban Peak, a Denver-area organization that helps homeless teens with food, shelter, warm clothes, and assistance in finding work. We have already had a donation (from New Jersey Comic Con Promoter, John Paul) of a remarkable selection of really nice Golden Age and Silver Age comics, but could definitely use some more collectibles to auction. If you could find some extra items in your collection that we could auction off to help the hundreds kids sleeping outside in the Denver area right now, your donation would be genuinely appreciated. Representatives of Urban Peak have been invited to speak at the auction, and they said that they would try to be at Jason St. on the morning of the 12th.

The third part of our huge auction on the 12th will be a liquidation of a portion of my personal comics history reference library. To explain, we are presently packing up everything stored in our 56th Ave. building, in anticipation of it being sold during the first quarter of next year. While our much bigger Jason St. building can easily accommodate the six million back issue comics we have stored in 56th Ave., we simply cannot keep everything we've accumulated during our 29 years of owning 56th. I already have a huge comics history reference library on shelves at my home in Boulder, so my wonderful back-up library that I kept at 56th is now up for grabs. Many of my books being auctioned on the 12th are so scarce that we have never before offered them for sale. Need I say any more? You really should plan to be at our auction on the 12th!

I will close today's newsletter by thanking everyone who has already supported Mile High Comics during this holiday season. Thanks to your kind patronage, we have had an excellent start to our own holidays. With the prodigious moving costs of our closing down our 56th Ave. warehouse looming on the horizon, your support is especially important to us this year. Thank you...

Happy collecting!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that Urban Peak is also seeking coats, gloves, boots, scarves, socks, personal toiletries (like what you get at hotels) and canned goods. We can accept clean used clothes this year, as well as new items. We have a huge donation box set up at our Jason St. Mega-Store, but you can also drop off your donations at Colorado Blvd. and Lakewood, and we'll make certain that they get to Urban Peak. I was poor as a youth and sometimes had to sleep outside in very cold weather, so I can personally assure you that helping these kids in need is truly important.
