More Great Comics - PREACHER, GRIMM FAIRY TALES, CREEPY, EERIE, more! Howdy! I want to begin today by letting you know that the unprecedented recent expansion of our online inventory of comics, books, and magazines is continuing unabated. We are now up to a pace of nearly one collection per hour! being offered to us at our Jason St. Mega-Store. Never, in all my 48 years in the comics business have I seen so many people wanting to sell us their toys, comics, books, and statues. This is really quite overwhelming... PREACHER (1995) #1 Before I fuel any misconceptions, you might think from what I just wrote that there was some sort of problem with the entire concept of collecting, and the perceived value of collectibles. Nope, that's not even close to true. If it were, our sales at Jason St. would not be up by an incredible 60% over last year. Instead, what we have going on here in Denver right now is a direct reflection of a local economy that has been radically altered by the legalization of marijuana. GRIMM FAIRY TALES (2005) #66 C To explain, we have been seeing upwards of 300,000 people per year moving into Colorado since pot was legalized five years ago. This influx of newbies has put tremendous pressure on our local house costs, with the net result being that many apartment rents have doubled. In order to cope with these cost increases many of our long time resident collectors are being forced to either move out of state, downsize their living space, or move in with friends and/or family. In all of those instances, owning large quantities of collectibles is perceived as a negative. CREEPY (MAGAZINE) (1964) #2 On the flip side of things, the pot industry has also employed many tens of thousands of people in here in Colorado, and their substantial wages have fueled an incredible economic boom. That having been said, it is precisely those newly enriched collectors who are now flooding into Jason St., buying up everything in sight. On many levels, I am quite grateful that we are being able to buy so much right now, as otherwise our wonderful Mega-Store would be stripped of its best material very quickly. Simply put, here in Colorado we currently live a world of haves, and have-nots, and our Mega-Store is right in the middle of all this economic tumult. In a nutshell, that is a primary cause of why we are seeing such an incredible influx of great comics, toys, books, and statues these days... While I will have Will Moulton post lists of our most recent acquisitions for you at the end of this newsletter, I did also want to mention that the people at the bottom of Denver's economic ladder are those who have been victimized the most by our booming Denver economy. I once again volunteered this morning with "Feeding Denver's Hungry," and we had about 1,500 hungry people show up at our two distribution areas. What is even more disturbing than that huge overall number is that the number of elderly and disabled people we are serving is at an all-time high, and increasingly we are seeing entire families on the streets. As I did last year, I will be offering you an opportunity to make a small contribution toward helping these destitute folks get through our harsh Denver winter. The thousands of socks, hats, scarves, and gloves that I distributed last year (thanks to your kind contributions...) made a huge difference, so I definitely want to do it again.
