World Record Comic Book Sale!

Howdy!

I spent the past hour being filmed for a local television news feature about this past weekend's sale of a CGC-graded 9.0 copy of ACTION COMICS #1 for $3,200,000+. It might surprise you to know that my reaction to that sale was that it was no big deal, as it was only to be expected. That's because I was already aware that the owner of the ACTION COMICS #1 copy from the Mile High Collection (which I sold in 1982...) reportedly turned down an offer of $5,000,000 cash, over three years ago. That Mile High copy of ACTION COMICS #1 has never been professionally graded, but having looked at it many times, I believe that it would grade significantly better than the copy that sold over the weekend. It has colors and cover gloss so sharp, that it looks as though it was printed yesterday...

What I thought was far more significant about this $3,200,000 sale was its overall validation of comics as a legitimate part of a lifetime investment strategy. I pointed out to the reporter that I have now been buying and selling comics for well over 44 years, and that my one abiding methodology has always been to reinvest my earnings from the sale of one comics collection, into buying two others. In a nutshell, that is how I managed to progress from being a 13 year-old kid of very modest means with just a little 4-foot exhibit table at a local antiques fair, into building Mile High Comics, Inc. into being the largest comics dealer in the world.

Of even greater importance to me, however, is the fact that I have made so many of our comics clients small fortunes along the way. If those of you who have been shopping with us for a while take a look at some of your old invoices, I think that you will be quite surprised at the incredible bargains that we provided to you. If you purchased comics from us during the 1970's and 1980's, in particular, you have made out extremely well. Far better, in fact, than you could ever have have done with more traditional investments. I congratulate you on your foresight, and your wisdom, for investing at least a small part of your future in old comics.

The real message that I wanted to convey to the viewers of today's TV news report, however, was that I believe that there is currently a comic book gold rush in progress. Never, in my entire 44-year career, have I seen such a positive market for old comics of all kinds. Of particular note is the huge growth in demand for older Marvel titles, especially those that are currently being considered for movies. With the previously unknown characters of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY turning that film into the #1 movie of the year (with a worldwide box office total of almost half a billion dollars in just four weeks...), older Marvel titles of all kinds are just flying off of our shelves.

Will all of those older comics we are currently selling so well turn out to be great investments? Probably not. But if past trends hold true, most will appreciate in value over the next couple of years by at least a little bit, and a few will absolutely skyrocket in value. Since no one really knows for certain which titles are going to end up being the biggest winners, anyone who is collecting and reading comics these days could end up owning the next ROCKET RACCOON (1988) #1, which increased in value by over 20X during just the past twelve months. All other considerations aside, I think this potential for huge gains in value is part of what makes comics collecting these days so much fun!

Speaking if fun, I am itching to go downstairs now and sort through another pallet of comics from those great collections that I picked up earlier this year in Pennsylvania. I have been sending about 2,000 of those comics a day to Will and Pam in our inventory division, and they have been grading them, and then posting them for you into our daily New-In-Stock links. Check out the entire New-In-Stock listing from the past week, and I believe that you will find an exciting and delightfully diverse selection of great comics bargains to potentially add into your collection.

In closing, when placing your order with us this week, please do not forget to type LABORDAY into the "Discount Codeword" line on our order form. That 50% off LABORDAY codeword is an annual steep discount benefit that we provide only to those of you who shop with us regularly. This special half price sale on all of our back issues will only last until next Tuesday (September 2nd), at noon. While new issues, CGC-Graded comics, and a few variants are not included in the codeword sale, our entire stock of eight million standard back issues IS available to you at half price when you utilize the LABORDAY codeword. Please do enjoy this great holiday discount, and please also accept our sincere thanks for helping support our efforts on your behalf here at Mile High Comics.
