SDCC Variants and July Comic News

Greeting from the Middle of the country and Comic Book World,

Once again, it is I, Greg VanEvery, your fearless leader of the NICE Subscription Club with some notes from the July Previews catalog.

First off, I want to let everyone in on a secret "Comic-Con was huge this year!" After a couple slow years, comic-wise in San Diego, it looks like the fans got a convention they wanted. While Hollywood still has a huge presence, comic fans had a lot to get into this year. As a special offer to our NICE customers that many not have made it to San Diego, we are offering 9 of the San Diego Comic-Con Variants for just $5 each. Here is a list of these excellent books:

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake - Card Wars #1 SDCC

Bob's Burgers #1 SDCC

Civil War #1 SDCC

Secret Wars #4 SDCC

Star Trek/Green Lantern #1 A SDCC

Star Trek/Green Lantern #1 B SDCC

Star Wars: Darth Vader #7 SDCC

Star Wars: Lando #1 SDCC

X-Men '92 #1 SDCC

Now, we can only make this offer for a short time as we have already sold-out of the Invader Zim #1 SDCC Variant so these will go fast. If you would like to order any of them, you can call Mario or myself at 1-800-676-6423 or e-mail me at nice@milehighcomics.com and we will get them added to your order.

As summer rages on, Previews is starting to prepare for Halloween. Many of the publishers are offering Halloween versions of their titles as both regular comics and mini-comic bundles to hand out instead of candy. As a father, I would much rather my kids come home with something to read rather than something that leads to wrappers on the floor and cavities, but that's my opinion.

DC is continuing their variant cover program with many of the titles having Green Lantern 75th Anniversary covers along with the regular cover. These are always done by various artists and have been quite popular with fans. September will also see the end of the "Truth" storyline in the Superman titles as the Man of Steel deals with being outed as Clark Kent. For those that may have missed some of the Convergence books, the Convergence HC and Trade paperbacks are being offered giving you a quick way to get caught up. September will also see the release (hopefully) of the last chapter of Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman, followed by the Hardcover collecting the 6 issue mini-series being released in November.

Over at Marvel, Star Wars and Secret Wars continue to dominate the comic world. With Secret Wars nearing the end, we see the first #1 issue of the All-New, All-different Marvel Universe with Invincible Iron Man. Written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by David Marquez, this will be the new flagship title at Marvel and leads into a ton of #1 issues set for October and November. With books like the Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, Doctor Strange, New Avengers, Uncanny Inhumans, Extraordinary X-Men, and Contest of Champions, Marvel is looking to reclaim the Fall season DC took from them when the New 52 was launched. Many of these will be continued from previous subscriptions but if you want to make sure you receive them, please send me an e-mail at nice@milehighcomics.com and I will double check it.

Of course, we are also continuing our Mile High Comics Variant Covers program with the final issues of Secret Wars by Dale Keown and the Ships Variant Covers to Star Wars #7 through #12 by Mike McKone. Being an admitted Star Wars Geek, I can't wait for these books to be released. I'm sure the Millennium Falcon cover will sell well, especially with the announcement of a young Han Solo movie in the works (maybe we'll see a pre-modification Falcon) but I'm glad to see an A-wing and Y-wing on the covers. They never seem to get any love.

Image is continuing to bring science fiction back to comics with the new title, Faster Than Light. This follows humans being able to travel faster than light (I know, weird title) and the possibilities this opens up. As Star Wars continues to be ultra-hot since the Marvel relaunch and anticipation of Force Awakens, IDW gets into the mix with an excellent Artifact Edition of early Marvel issues. These gorgeous books have tons of scans of original art by Howard Chaykin and Carmine Infantino as well as lots of extras.

Not to be outdone, many smaller publishers are starting some note-worthy books in September. The Archie Comics relaunch continues with Jughead #1 while Dynamite Entertainment gives us the crossover we have all been waiting for, Aliens/Vampirella #1. Bongo prepares for Halloween and a new Treehouse of Horror episode by issuing new prints of the past Treehouse of Horror trade paperbacks and ONI Press releases the first Rick & Morty trade paperback, collecting the first 5 issues of the series based on the animated show. For fans of the Golden Age of comics, Chartwell is releasing War Years hardcovers that collect World War 2 adventures of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. For those that enjoy the back story of comics, Touchstone has the Amazing Fantastic Incredible: A Marvelous Memoir trade paperback and hardcover that chronicles Stan "The Man" Lee and his rise to comic greatness in a way only Stan could present.

If you are looking for something new and different, the Double Take Super Pack might fit NICEly. This set collects all 10 of the #1 issues from Double Take (Dedication, Home, Slab, Honor, Medic, Rise, Remote, Soul, Spring, Z-Men) and the beginning of Night of the Living Dead storyline. It's a great way to tryout some different books. For the Spider-Gwen fans, Previews has the Spider-Gwen Women's Hoodie (sorry guys) that turns anyone into the newest Spider-girl.

This is just a small sample of upcoming items. You can always check out other items through our search engine http://www.milehighcomics.com/nice/">. If you can't locate what you're looking for, you can always call or e-mail Mario or myself and we will do all we can to get you what you want.

May The Force Be With You
