Denver Comic-Con Party News

Howdy!

Today has been extremely busy, as I am trying to put together all of the logistics to handle the largest public event in the history of Mile High Comics. To explain, we are hosting the official opening night party for the 2014 Denver Comic-Con on Thursday, June 12th, at our Jason St. Mega-Store. The party officially begins at 5 PM and runs through 10 PM, but we are guessing it will start earlier, and last longer. We are currently estimating that 3,000+ fans may attend our party, which is double any previous event. With 45,000 square feet available we do have the space that we need for that many attendees, but it will require some serious planning to successfully keep everyone both comfortable, and entertained.

Of particular concern that evening will be parking. We do have on-street parking for 200-300 cars within a few blocks of our Mega-Store, but if you arrive after the 5 PM official opening time, you will need to plan on hiking a little way. If you could, it would be really nice if you could plan to carpool with friends that evening, or take public transportation. Our 41st and Fox light rail station will not open for another year, but the #6 RTD buses do stop just a block away from the Jason St. Mega-Store.

In addition to having many of the creators from the Denver Comic-Con in attendance that evening to create sketches, sell memorabilia, and sign autographs, we will also be the official pick-up point for prepaid Denver Comic-Con tickets. Picking up your ticket at our party will allow you to escape from any possible delays that might occur at the convention center on Friday morning.

As regards entertainment, we will be hosting a huge all-ages Cosplay costume contest that night, with $1,000 in Mile High Comics gift certificates as prizes. Contact Pam Brandle at pamb@milehighcomics.com for our initial thoughts on how we might be arranging this cool event. We are also having live sword fighting exhibitions by two groups, one in armor with steel swords, and another with bamboo swords. Finally, as the poster below briefly explains, our most lavish free entertainment of the evening will be an amazing three-hour Cosplay drag show, featuring the incredibly talented male and female performers of the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire.

I.C.R.M.E. 1st Annual Cosplay Drag Show

This fun, high energy show is a benefit for the Denver Children's Advocacy Center, a 501-C3 non-profit organization that runs three safe houses for children that have been sexually abused. The ICRME is helping them to raise funds for a medical center in one of their houses, which will provide an alternative to some hospital exams. We will be hosting a huge ICRME bake sale during our party, for this same worthy cause. Watching the show is free, but it is traditional to tip each performer $1 for their efforts. Please bring some dollar bills to donate, if you can. A full 80% of the funds received from tipping performers (and from the bake sale) will go directly to the Denver Children's Advocacy Center, with the remainder going to the ICRME to pay for their costs of putting on the show.

Chuck at Coronation

To explain why I chose to have a drag show as our primary entertainment at our party, I received the honor on Sunday evening of being appointed as the 41st Marquis of the Imperial Court of the Rocky Mountain Empire. As the Marquis (5th in succession in the Imperial Family), I am responsible for hosting at least one charitable show during the next twelve months. I chose to start our fund-raising year off with a bang, by combining my show with our opening night party. To create a bridge between drag show fans and comics fans, I am asking all of our entertainers to perform that evening in either superhero or fantasy-themed costumes, and to choose superhero or fantasy-themed music. This will also be an all-ages event.

I will close today's newsletter with an amusing side note. Since I am responsible for this official ICRME fundraising event, protocol requires that I personally give the opening performance. It has been 40 years since I performed in musical theater, but I am already practicing for my number. Think rock and roll, and Chuck in a Superman costume (!). No matter what happens, I promise you that our party on the night of June 12th is going to be remembered, for many years to come...

Happy Collecting!
