Howdy!
While Free Comic Book Day is not actually until NEXT Saturday (May 4th), Free Comic Book Day madness has already begun here at Mile High Comics! As you are probably already aware, FCBD has grown over the past decade to become the single busiest day in the entire comic book year. Managing the crowds on FCBD has become somewhat of a difficulty for us, however, as has been trying to figure out a fair way to allocate the free comics. Last year, for example, we had over 1,000 fans show up at each of our stores. This not only created long lines, but also caused us to run out of several highly desirable FCBD issues long before some of our most dedicated supporters could receive copies. Clearly, we had to come up with a better allocation system for this year.
Before I tell you about our new FCBD plan, however, I have to let you know that there are a total of 53 (!!!) different FCBD editions this year, with about half featuring new material. Obtaining a complete set of the 53 different 2013 FCBD editions will certainly be possible, but it will take you a little effort. Here is this year's FCBD plan at Mile High Comics:
1) Anyone visiting any of our 4 stores on FCBD ((May 4th) can receive 3 FCBD editions of their choice, but they must be different titles.
2) By visiting all four of our stores you can obtain a total of 12 FCBD editions
3) On Friday evening, May 3rd, we will be reopening our Jason St. Mega-Store at 11 PM for a special midnight release of all of the FCBD editions. You can earn another 3 FCBD editions (in addition to the 3 you can obtain from Jason St. the next day...) simply by attending this midnight release party. The party will begin at 11 PM, and end at 12:30 AM. (You can start picking your FCBD comics at 12:01)
4) In addition to the 15 FCBD editions that you can earn by visiting our stores, you can receive a ticket that will entitle you to yet one more FCBD edition for each $10 that you spend with us over the next eight days at any of our stores. You can cash in these tickets at any of our stores on FCBD, or on Sunday, May 5th, with the only restriction being that you cannot request multiple copies of the same issue. Please note, however, that all of our FCBD tickets will expire at 6 PM on May 5th, and have no future value.
5) Finally, while Free Comic Book Day is an incredible boon for all comics fans, comics publishers no longer give comics retailers their FCBD comics at anything approaching the bargain prices of the past. As a result, we received a bill exceeding $10,000.00 for the FCBD editions that we are giving away this year. To help us to cover that cost, we will begin selling all of our remaining FCBD editions at a minimum of $2.99 each as of Monday, May 6th. Some may end up being more than $2.99, however, depending on how online prices are trending that morning...
Also, just so you know ahead of time we ordered 50 complete sets of FCBD editions specifically for our online sales on Monday. These copies will not be released for giveaways in our stores on FCBD, even if we run out of selected issues, which we are almost certain to do. That having been said, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to you to begin your FCBD quest early in the day on the 4th. Most comics retailers across America only ordered the top 10-20 of the FCBD titles, so a great many of those titles released by the smaller publishers have exceptionally tiny print runs. We fully expect to run out of our allocations on many of these scarcer issues very early in the day on the 4th. 'Nuff said.
