Free DEADPOOL KILLS DEADPOOL #1

Howdy!

Our Friday has been going very well, as we were able to move over 200,000 comics from our soon-to-be-closed 56th Ave. headquarters, over to their new home in the back of our Jason St. Mega-Store. We still have about that many more of our website "singles" to move out of 56th, but with any luck we can get that task completed tomorrow. It all depends on how many volunteer workers show up to help us at Jason St. in the morning.

Ten-Pack Racks

In the meantime, the first two of our enormous ten-pack shelving units are also now in place, and ready to reload. We have over two million comics packaged into ten-packs in 56th. Moving them is not particularly difficult, but shifting that many 10-packs into long boxes is going to be very time-consuming. That worries me, as we have only 15 days left before we are supposed to be totally out of 56th. My fingers are firmly crossed...

On a related note, our invoicing and packing of orders will move to Jason St. on either Tuesday, or Wednesday. That move will mark the end if an era in Mile High Comics history that began on June 16th, 1986, on that day we first moved into 56th. One would think that this ending would make me somewhat melancholy, but nothing could be further from the truth. In all honesty, the 29+ years that we spent in 56th Ave. were ones of endless struggle and deprivation. No matter how hard we tried to economize, the very thin margins that plague comics retailing left us perpetually undercapitalized. I managed to hold on through some very difficult times (when thousands of my fellow comics retailers had to close their doors), but being broke all the time sucked much of the joy right out of me. Once we turn over the keys to 56th to the new owners, I never want to revisit those memories of not-so-genteel poverty for the rest of my life.

Two Million Comics!

Before I leave you with the impression that being in the comics business has been entirely less than joyful, let me point out that (despite our endless undercapitalization issues) we somehow managed to expand our comics inventory by a factor of 5X during our three decades of occupying 56th Ave. Our core inventory of ten million back issue comics, magazines, graphic novels, trade paperback, and hardbacks is now the best in the world, and I am very proud of having been able to slowly gather together over the years such a wonderful accumulation of choice collectibles.

Of greatest importance, however, is the fact we shipped a staggering $100,000,000.00 (one hundred million dollars!) in comics out of 56th during the past 29 years. While we earned very little (if anything) from many of those transactions, the sum of the patronage that we received did cover our operating expenses, and kept us going. What really matters to me, however, is that we made a difference in the comics world by providing over one million comics fans with a reliable source for their comics and books, both new and old. I genuinely love the world of comics, and the thought that I have been able to make so many of my fellow comics fans happy, brings me great inner peace. The last few decades may have been a struggle, but we worked hard, and accomplished great good. Not everyone can say that about their life.

As regards the new life that we are beginning at Jason St., it will be considerably different precisely because I sold 56th, and used the proceeds to immediately pay off 90% of our long term debt. While we do still have some pressing short term obligations to pay, it will be much easier for us to cover our expenses operating out of Jason St., as we will no longer have to bear the $30,000/month cost that was required to keep 56th open. That is precisely why I look upon this difficult moving process as merely being one last bump in the road. Hauling tons of comics seven days a week for a month is unpleasant, but the end result is well worth it.
