Lauderdale, Florida, where I was blessed to be able to participate in the very first crowning ceremony for the newly-formed Imperial Sun Court of All of Florida. I had a wonderful time at the event, and greatly enjoyed the nice weather, at least until it started pouring rain on Friday night. Torrential downpours and tuxedos do not mix well... Chuck with Empress Misty Blue of San Francisco Today has been a blur of frenetic activity, as I have been trying to get as much work done as possible before I leave again, on Wednesday morning. This time my journey will be comics related, as I will be traveling to Los Angeles to participate in the memorial service for Stan Lee on Wednesday evening. My two good friends, Kevin Smith and Rob Leifeld, will be hosting, so it should be a wonderful tribute to a great man whom I was blessed to know and love. As an aside, I am going to be very curious to see how many of my fellow comics retailers are there to participate in Stan's memorial. One would think that quite a few of them would show up, but I am not so sure that they have either the time, or the money. Comics retailing has become a very difficult endeavor of late, as escalating cover prices have placed a seriously hazardous burden on retailers forced to advance order very expensive comics with zero return privileges for unsold product. As a result, a great many comics shops live from distributor bill to distributor bill, relying solely upon weekly revenues to stay afloat. Stan Lee and Chuck Rozanski I mention the fragile nature of comics shops (and bookstores in general) because Aardvark Books of San Francisco (a survivor of 40 years of evolution) just became the latest victim of our changing retailing landscape. In their case the owners were retiring, and the building was sold, so this demise was not purely a result of a lack of consumer support. At the end of the day, however, the brutality of the economics of bookselling precluded the store from being sold to new owners, or moving to a new location. Sadly, the Bay Area has lost yet another treasure... What I want to mention at this point is that you need to consider your own purchasing habits as regards small local retailers. I love the great deals that I get online from the major dotcom retailers, but I also go out of my way to spend at least some of my money with local stores, and most especially with retailers with whom I feel a personal kinship. If you value your local comics shop or bookstore, don't just mouth platitudes about how much you love them. Sad to say, even the kindest of platitudes are useless when the landlord wants his rent, or the distributor is threatening to shut you down. Vote with your wallet, dammit, and help to keep those institutions that you love alive. 'Nuff said.
