STAR WARS #1 Sells Out

Howdy!

We had expected the release of Marvel's new STAR WARS (2015) #1 to be a big deal, but the sheer power of yesterday's fan response still filled us with awe. Advance word was that Marvel printed one million copies of the standard edition of the number one issue, yet the Diamond Distributing website showed STAR WARS (2015) #1 as completely sold out yesterday afternoon. That's just an incredible sales figure in a world where an average popular comics title only sells 40,000-60,000 copies...

Star Wars #1 Regular

The good news this morning is that Marvel must have released to Diamond overnight some of the copies that they hold in reserve for lost/damaged shipments. As a result, we were able to slide in a quick reorder for another 390 copies of the first printing. Were it not for that unexpected good fortune, we would today already be completely sold out of the regular edition.

As regards the spectrum of Marvel-produced variant editions of STAR WARS that we received, we sold half of our entire allotment within the first 12 hours of release. Sales then slowed down after we bumped up our asking prices late yesterday afternoon, but it is still looking like our allocation of some of the Marvel variants will sell out by the weekend. The last time I remember this kind of solid response to a major new comics release was AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #700, all the variants of which still remain in very high demand.

As I promised in my last newsletter, I will now let you in on a cool side project that I created as a part of the publication our Mile High Comics STAR WARS #1 variant edition. Simply put, our #1 variant is but one of six (!) that we will be publishing, all with covers by the great Humberto Ramos. Here is our cover for our Mile High Comics STAR WARS #2.

Star Wars #2 Mile High

Producing six covers in a row is cool, but even cooler is the fact that I asked that Humberto please create them in such a way that our six variants form a single image when all are completed! Below is the frame of that combined image, with the two complete covers:

Star Wars #1 - #6 Mile High Variants

I now want to let you in on some numbers that I think that you will find interesting. First, we are planning to set aside copies of each of our six variants, specifically to form complete cover sets. That will reduce the number of single copies we can sell of any given issue. Second, our plan is to market our sets and individual issues all the way through the release of the ninth STAR WARS film, which if they follow the pattern of one movie every three years, will not be released until December, 2021.

Finally, you need to know that we are currently receiving orders for our remaining copies of our own STAR WARS (2015) #1 variant at a pace that is completely unsustainable if we want to have even a few remaining in stock when that last film releases. Simply put, with a print run of only 3,000 copies, our #1 edition now has over half of its entire production committed. That being the case, I need to let you know that our current $19.95 offering price will absolutely expire at noon, on Saturday. Our price will then bump up to $24.95. If sales then still do not slow down, we will have no choice but to move our #1 issue up to $29.95 sometime next week. If you want to add a copy of our Mile High Comics variant edition to your collection for only $19.95, you only have 36 hours left.

Star Wars #1 Mile High

As regards our #2-#6 variants, Greg and Mario in our new comics subscription department are now accepting advance orders for both individual issues, and sets of #2-#6. The advance order price is $19.95 each, or $99.75 for #2-#6. Unless you specify otherwise, each issue will be shipped to you as they release. If you already have a #1 on order from us, this provides you with a wonderful opportunity to build your own set! Need I say more?

You can contact Greg or Mario at 303-455-2659 weekdays 9-5, or write to them 24/7 at nice@milehighcomics.com. Only 500 copies of our Mile High Comics STAR WARS #2-#6 will be available for advance sale, and there is a very strictly enforced limit of five copies (of each...) per client.

Happy Collecting!

P.S. Sales hype and speculation aside, I have been hearing that the story and art in STAR WARS #1 is excellent! That bodes very well for the future of this new Marvel/LucasFilms collaboration.
