X-Men (1963) #115
Guest-starring Ka-Zar. "Visions of Death!" is written by Chris Claremont and drawn by John Byrne and Terry Austin. The Savage Land is a prehistoric paradise nestled in the arctic wilderness within a pocket of tropical atmosphere. But its primeval beauty houses not only wonders of nature but freaks as well. Witness Sauron, the mutant who can become a walking pterodactyl with the power to control minds and who must drain the life from mortals to survive. The last time he clashed with the X-Men (issues #60 and #61), he convinced the high-flying Angel that his teammates were his enemies. History repeats itself here as Wolverine falls prey to his mind-tricks and soon turns his adamantium claws on Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Banshee.
Now, the X-Men must save Storm and battle Sauron and Wolverine at the same time. Luckily, Logan regains his senses in time to avoid killing his fellow mutant heroes. Just as Wolverine is about to gain his revenge on Sauron, however, Ka-Zar, the lord of the Savage Land, intervenes. Karl Lykos, the man who becomes Sauron, recalls a tale of an ancient petrified god being brought back to life by sorcery and sacrifice. This Garokk once ruled the Savage Land and now reborn has used his immense powers to lay icy waste to all who refuse to live again under his tyranny. This new evil makes the X-Men forget Sauron's menace in order to concentrate on the much-greater threat posed by a god gone mad.
