Marvel Team-Up (1972) #140
Starring Spider-Man and the Black Widow. "Where Were You When the Lights Went Out?" was written by Bill Mantlo and Tom DeFalco with art by Ron Frenz and Mike Esposito. Cover by Ed Hannigan and Klaus Janson. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, New York suffered a series of blackouts that tested the character of the city's citizenry and pushed emergency services to the breaking point. Our story here begins with one of those municipal nightmares and the seemingly inevitable looting that it spurs. A small business owner is shot trying to protect his livelihood and tragically, Spidey's is too late to save him.
A former gang-member, Juan Santiago, is charged with the crime but loudly proclaims his innocence. Luckily, he manages to get attorney Matt (Daredevil) Murdock to defend him. But new evidence is needed to find the real killer and that sends both Spider-Man and DD's old friend and lover, the Black Widow, into the barrio to investigate. A violent encounter with youthful gang-members ensues but our arachnid avengers are successful. But soon thereafter, Spider-Man encounters a bizarre structure that pops up in the middle of Central Park overnight. Mysteriously drawn to the alien building, Spidey swings in to look closer and disappears! (see the Secret Wars to learn what happened next!).
