Hulk (1962) #6
“The Metal Master!” is written by Stan Lee and drawn by Steve Ditko. First appearance and origin of Rick Jones’ Teen Brigade. Comic art master Ditko takes over art chores on this, the last issue of the Hulk’s first comic run. After this, the green goliath would appear in Tales to Astonish at first as a back-up to Giant-Man stories and then sharing the pages with the Sub-Mariner, before re-launching with issue #102. Writer Lee was still experimenting with Bruce Banner’s transformation into the Hulk and whether they were separate personalities or one. In fact, in separate instances in this story, Banner briefly has some of the Hulk’s strength and then, the Hulk has Banner’s face for a short time.
But the true menace of the issue is an alien tyrant called the Metal Master who threatens global commerce and stability with his amazing ability to melt, reform or disintegrate any metal. While General “Thunderbolt” Ross rails and his daughter Betty worries over the disappearance of Bruce Banner, the Metal Master runs amok across the world and finally ends up outside of Washington D.C. to deliver his ultimatum: turn over planetary control or perish! Meanwhile, the military has captured the Hulk and old Jade Jaws blames Rick who he thinks betrayed him. Too young to join the military against the Metal Master, Rick forms a nationwide society of youngsters committed to justice, a Teen Brigade, to help the Hulk turn back the would-be conqueror from space!
