Astonishing X-Men (2004) #6
Written by Joss Whedon and drawn by John Cassaday. Ord of the Breakworld has a mission: since the people of his warlike race have foreseen that a mutant from Earth will destroy their empire, he must wipe out all mutants on the planet. To that end, he recruits Dr. Kavita Rao of Benetech Laboratories to develop the mutant antidote later called Hope. She agrees and their unlikely ally in this insidious plot is none other than the international spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D. The Sentient Worlds Observation and Response Department (S.W.O.R.D.), a division of S.H.I.E.L.D. headed by Special Agent Abigail Brand, has struck a deal with Ord in order to stave off invasion, which will come unless Hope can eliminate the future mutant threat to the Breakworld. What the X-Men find most offensive about this scheme, however, is Benetech's practice of testing Hope on mutants, particularly their long-lost comrade Colossus.
While Nick Fury, Agent Brand, Dr. Rao and the X-Men try to sort out their differences, a riot breaks out among the mutants waiting in line to get Hope. Ord uses the resulting confusion to escape, taking with him Dr. Rao's favorite mutant patient, the little girl named Tildie. Rushing outside to see Ord's spaceship fly off, the X-Men search for a solution. Wolverine and Colossus come across the answer: the Fastball Special! The Russian strongman hurls Logan at the escaping craft and with Wolverine's claws in his face, Ord sees the light and returns to Earth. With the present crisis averted, the X-Men must turn their attention to the future. Although Wolverine managed to destroy much of Dr. Rao's research on Hope, the "wonder cure" will be perfected at some point, they know. And will Colossus and Shadowcat rekindle their love?
