THOR (1962) (#83-125 JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, 126-502) #140 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Thor #140
"The Growing Man!" is written by Stan Lee with art by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta. How do you stop a foe that gets bigger and stronger each time you hit him? That's the dilemma facing the Thunder God as he faces off against the incredible Growing Man, an android weapon from the future sent to our time by Kang, the Conqueror (see Avengers #8, for Kang's first appearance). Always involved in a war of conquest in one epoch or another, Kang sent the Growing Man to 1967 for safekeeping. However, the amazing being, at first only doll-sized, was unearthed by an archeological expedition and shipped to the U.S. for study. Along the way it grows larger than man-sized and immediately begins menacing all of humanity around it.

Searching for its master like some super-sci fi Frankenstein, the Growing Man wreaks devastation on the New York City suburbs until Thor steps in and hammers away at the now-giant enemy. But to Thor's astonishment, each blow he strikes with Mjolnir increases the stimuloid's size and power. Just as the creature grows as tall as a house, Kang his master shows up to retrieve him and sends Thor flying with a shock of cobalt power from his deadly gloves. Before the time-hopping villain can retreat, however, Thor throws both weapon and master into a dimensional vortex from which there is no escape! (Actually, they did escape and return to menace New York in Avengers #69). Also, in the back up Tales of Asgard, "The Battle Begins!" as Hogun the Grim, Fandral, Volstagg and Thor face a terrible jinni controlled by the murderous Mogul!
