SUPERMAN (1939) (#1-423) (DC) #168 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Superman (1939) #168
"Luthor Superhero!" All-Luthor issue! What's this? Superman, a wanted criminal without powers, being hunted by the super-hero Lex Luthor? On the far planet of Lexor named after the criminal scientist, Luthor is adored as the hero who returned their civilization to its former glory by rediscovering its lost technology. Still, Superman knows Luthor is merely a criminal on the run, having been recently freed by Brainiac. But under Lexor's red sun, Superman is powerless while Luthor invents a machine to give himself super-powers and becomes the Defender.

As Superman is shunned by the populace as a villain, Luthor is honored with the opening of a new museum illustrating his good deeds. The people of Lexor shower Luthor with multi-colored rainbow jewels: gems that Superman suddenly realizes he has to have. Acting every bit like a common thief, Superman steals the jewels and tries to get away. But, acting as the mysterious Defender, Luthor hunts him down. The Man of Steel convinces Luthor that these gems, and the mind-numbing radiation they emit, are what sent Lexor's civilization into a spiral in the first place and Luthor allows him to escape into space to destroy them in the heart of the Sun. However, not content to let Superman go free, Luthor pursues him back to Earth with the intent of bringing him back to Lexor for imprisonment. But instead of returning to Metropolis in the 1960s, Luthor shows up in San Francisco, circa 1906 and through a strange turn of events becomes "Lex Luthor, Daily Planet Editor!" Great Caesar's Ghost!
