SPACE: 1999 (1975) (#1-7) (CHARLTON) #1 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Space: 1999 (1975) #1
Premiere issue. Art by Joe Staton. Written by Nicola Cuti. For baby boomers that couldn't get enough Star Trek re-runs in the mid-1970s, Space: 1999 was a welcome substitute to help sate their sci-fi appetites. A product of the U.K., it featured a near all-Brit cast except for Mission: Impossible alums (and real-life husband and wife acting team) Martin Landau and Barbara Bain. As Commander John Koenig, Landau poured sincerity into each line as he helped a crew of lunar-based scientists survive being ripped away from their home-planet Earth.

The moon's amazing journey through space begins with a freak nuclear explosion on the lunar surface (too much radioactive waste makes for high drama) as illustrated in "Moonless Night," our first story. Then, the crew of Moonbase Alpha learns a lesson in xenophobia as they encounter slug-like monsters on the surface of alien planet. "Intelligent Species" pits Koenig's never-ending search for a new home for his people against a life-form well beyond his understanding.
