SGT. FURY AND HIS HOWLING COMMANDOS (1963) #17 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes (1963) #17
"While the Jungle Sleeps" is written by Stan Lee with art by Dick Ayers and Vince Colletta. Cover by Jack Kirby. Our story begins as the Howling Commandoes are trying to make their way across the Sahara to an Allied airbase after a major confrontation with the Nazis. The Howlers have to ditch their camels and hunker down in the sand, however, as two German warplanes find them and hit them with devastating strafing runs. Miraculously, they manage to destroy one plane and fell another and then take the pilot hostage.

A quick call to Allied Command back in Britain, however, finds Capt. Sawyer with another mission for the Howlers. This time they have to march into the nearby jungle and rescue a unit of American flyboys who were delivering relief supplies to a native tribe. With their captive Nazi pilot in tow, the Commandoes head into the thick of the jungle but are soon set upon by the very natives the Army Air Force was trying to help. Worse, once they find the Americans, Sgt. Fury and his men realize the natives are working with the Nazis to build a secret airstrip!
