SEVEN SOLDIERS: GUARDIAN (MANHATTAN GUARDIAN) (2005) #1 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Seven Soldiers: Guardian (2005) #1
Premiere issue. "Pirates of Manhattan" is written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Cameron Stewart. Innovative scribe Morrison continues to aptly display his amazing ability to take out of date concepts in comic book mythology and revive them so that they are not only relevant to today but ground-breaking in their theme. In the Golden Age of Comics, the Guardian was a Joe Simon/Jack Kirby creation that closely followed the form and function of their previous creation Captain America. Policeman Jim Harper befriended a group of orphans known as the Newsboy Legion and took to the streets in a blue and gold costume with police-like shield whenever crooks were beyond the law's reach. The character was briefly updated in the 1970s (first as a clone in Jimmy Olsen by Kirby himself and later as a member of the Teen Titans).

But here, Morrison re-creates the character in a suburban nightmare setting in which subway-riding pirates employ bloody tactics in a never-ending gang war deep underground. Only the crusading citizen-reporters employed by the Manhattan Guardian have the guts to stand up to these maniacs of the Metro. But more firepower is needed to combat the likes of All-Beard, the most feared Subway Pirate of all. The Manhattan Guardian puts out an ad for someone to become the first costumed superhero-reporter of its vast Newsboy Army and retired cop Jake Jordan answers the call. The problem is, his interview consists of battling terrorists who have seemingly taken over the Manhattan Guardian building. Worse, the criminals seem to have taken over control of the Golem, a mystic warrior whose job it was to protect Ed Stargard, the electronic brain of the Manhattan Guardian. Can Jordan survive this "interview" long enough to don the blue and gold uniform the city needs him to wear?
