PHANTOM STRANGER (1969) (#1-42) #17 - Descriptive Bibliography

Plot Synopsis: Phantom Stranger (1969) #17
Cover by Neal Adams. "Like a Ghost from the Ashes" is written by Len Wein with art by Jim Aparo. It begins with a desperate man running ahead of a train on a New York subway station track. After being rescued by the Phantom Stranger, the man is targeted by a group of thugs bent on keeping him from revealing his secret, a handful of dusty scrolls holding a deadly curse. When the Stranger tries to intervene again, he's overcome by a sudden weakness of mystic origin.

The next several hours unwind a mystery involving a blind psychic girl, an archeological dig in the Middle East, the Phantom Stranger's old foe Tannarak and the mythological fiery bird of resurrection known as the Phoenix! Then, Dr. Thirteen the Ghost-Breaker strives to solve the mystery of the "Suicide Tower" before succumbing to its spell himself (written by Frances Herron and drawn by Leonard Starr). Finally, a French woman declares in horror "I Was a Victim of Black Magic!"
