|Plot Synopsis: Marvel Universe: The End (2003) #4|
"Contamination!" is written and drawn by Jim Starlin with inks by Al Milgrom. Never one to think small, Thanos has always lusted after either total control over the universe or its complete destruction. Thanks to the Celestial Order, who gifted Pharaoh Akhenaten with almost unlimited power to rule the Earth, Thanos has now been led to source of all energy and can realize either of those goals. Accompanied by the Defenders and Captain Marvel, the Titan has reached the Heart of the Universe. While the super-hero champions get wiped out one by one by the defending Celestial Order, Thanos grabs his chance to merge with the infinite power source. Once he has adjusted to his new power level, Thanos begins to clean house–starting with Akhenaten.
What ensues is a cosmic battle on a higher plane in which energies are released that could rend galaxies asunder. But in the end, Thanos triumphs; even moving back in time to ancient Egypt to help fellow time-traveler Dr. Doom finish off Akhenaten's physical form. Then Thanos wipes out the Celestial Order before it gains its god-like status. Remaking history, Thanos recreates a world just like it was prior to Akhenaten's destruction of the X-Men, Fantastic Four and the Avengers. Only a few hyper-sensitive beings on Earth could detect the alteration in the universal time-line. But in the heavens, a court of higher beings led by the Living Tribunal and including, among others, Zeus, Thor, Galactus, the Watcher, Eternity and the Celestials, know of Thanos' deeds and rule that he must be stopped.
